Here is a the service position for all of the hoses and wires and tubes. There are three wire connections back there: EGR valve, Cam sensor and Rail pressure sensor. The harness is zip-tied to two plastic channels. I removed one and removed part of the harness from the other. You can also see the EGR Temperature #2 sensor in this picture.

The valve has to be held very still for a measurement. The pot resistance is typically 5k (2k to 10k say) from end to end, with a smoothly varying resistance on the signal to either end. I have had a lot of electrical problems with the EGR on my 1.8, which is very similar. Just bad contacts inside the unit, both on the pot & the motor.
